It's Spring!

Despite a chilly weekend, the birds are definitely out chirping at my house, so that must mean spring is here. I know we are all looking forward to our week off to recharge.

My students are finishing up a review unit on narrative this week. We're strengthening our reading strategies and studying the new Republic of Texas.

Tablet-Tastic!

We are all just thrilled to FINALLY be using our tablets. Our kick-off went very well and the students were patient and cooperative as we worked through the hiccups that we encountered. This week, students in my class will be using their tablets to do web research on the events leading up to the Texas revolution. I feel very "techy" by using QR Codes to direct the students to some great websites.

We have also started a new unit in reading and writing. We are revisiting narratives in order to practice the skills we've already learned and to add to our reading and writing toolboxes.

Back into the Routine

What a crazy few weeks! Between benchmark testing and an injured ankle we've been rather busy, but we're getting back to our usual routine. This week we will wrap up our units on poetry and colonization of Texas. The exciting event for this week though will be FINALLY getting our tablets! I know the students are thrilled and we can't wait to start using them regularly in class!

A New Year and New Learning

2013 sure did get here in a flash, but I am excited to start the new year fresh with some new topics. In reading and writing we will be focusing on poetry. Poetry always intimidates me, but we will be exploring some strategies that will help all of us appreciate this genre.

This week we will be visiting the One Room School House at the OLC. Students will participate in a simulation in a typical day of students from the late 1800's. It's always one of my favorite days of the school year!

The Countdown Begins...

One week to go!! We can do it! I can't believe how much our 4th graders have grown since August.

This week will be filled with learning and fun. On Wednesday we celebrate our annual Polar Express day. Students can wear their pajamas to school as long as they are school appropriate and follow dress code. On Thursday, the choir will perform their annual winter show and we will also celebrate our fiction pieces at our publishing party. And, of course Friday is our winter party at 9:30.

Don't forget to bring in your permission slips for our field trip! We are going to the Outdoor Learning Center on January 10th, just 2 days after we return from school. Parents, we would love your help out there! It's a very hands on field trip!

I want to thank everyone for a fabulous first half of the year. I can't wait to see everyone in 2013!
